Empowering mediators to achieve higher success rates in mediating disputes

A New Advanced Training Program for Mediators

The Indonesian Dispute Board (IDB) and the Institute of Nordic Mediation (INM) have joined forces to develop this advanced training program, specifically tailored for experienced mediators.

Our goal is to help professional mediators achieve even greater success in mediating disputes. What You’ll Get from our Mediation Training

When you enrol with us, you can expect to gain the following  learnings or takeaways:

  1. Knowledge about conflicts and how to enter as a third party
  2. Communication skills;  practical, hands-on approach by which you get concrete tools to handle all sorts of mediations.
  3. Values and attitudes as a basis for mediation, rather than a a set of rules
  4. A process of personal development  in order to integrate the skills and the knowledge
  5. Access to a network and mentoring with personal feedback once the training is finished
  6. Certification & recognition

1. Knowledge

Examples of knowledge you can expect to acquire

  • Nordic Reflexive Model
  • Inner Development; becoming facilitative
  • Group Mediation
  • Cross-cultural Competence
  • AI Assistance and online Mediation
  • Restorative justice
  • Reframing
  • Handling Stalemate

2. Communication Skills

You will train how to handle for example when

  •  the parties start arguing
  • they attack each other or the mediator
  • the parties do not want to talk to each other
  • one party dominates the other party
  • the parties lie
  • the parties cannot agree on what the problem is
  • the parties do not agree on who should be involved in the mediation

3. Values and Attitudes

You will acquire the value that no conflict finds its sustainable solution unless all parties involved are participating, felt seen, heard and held accountable.

The Nordic values of togetherness, respect for each individual and their uniqueness, as well as collaboration, equality and fairness in any process between people are prevalent during all the training.

You will also acquire the non-judgemental attitude that it is not so much people's personal fault that they get into apparently unsolvable conflicts. Rather it is the circumstances they are subjected to. When the mediator provides empathy, unconditional positive regard, and is congruent - parties tend to start doing that with themselves and each other. Herein lies the magic of peaceful conflict resolution.

4. Personal Development

You don't primarily receive training in theory, but in skills, attitudes and values. You don't just know what to do, but you have trained enough times to both know how to do it and to have integrated this skill so that you can improvise, even when under pressure. In practice, this means handling the difficult mediations and the unreasonable parties.

You will integrate the benefits of having a facilitative approach, compared to an evaluative one.

Because you are a human being, you are imperfect. You will develop an understanding for your own biases, as well as an ease to recognise and acknowledge the mistakes you make.

5. Access to our Network with Mentoring and personal Feedback

Because everyone is imperfect, being a mediator is an eternal learning process. Therefore, our format is.

1. pre-boarding - 2. offline training - 3. mentoring

Thus, when you have finished your offline training, expect to be invited into our world-wide "Nordic family of mediators", where you will be able to share your doubts, discuss challenging mediations and get personal feedback on your performance - in order to improve and learn from your experience, as well as incrementing your success rate in mediation.

6. Certification & Recognition

Upon succesful completion of the program, you will be awarded the Certified Advanced Professional Mediator (CAPM) accreditation.

Your name and picture will also be included among our accredited mediators, both on our website and on our social media. This may help you getting more mediation assignments.

The Art of Mediation -
Insights from an Inspiring Indonesian Experience

During our trip to Indonesia in November and Desember 2024  we had the privilege of meeting with colleagues from various institutions, including the Supreme Court, The Islamic Court, and the Civil Court. We also engaged with professionals from a Women and Children Protection Center, village mediators, Bhayangkara University, and Women Mediators. We even attended the grand opening of Indonesia’s first Coffee Mediation Café—a unique and inspiring initiative.

Mediation is deeply embedded in Indonesian culture, making it a natural practice in both private and public sectors. The country has made great progress in professionalizing mediation and improving mediator education. In some cases, it is a preferred alternative to the courts, while in others, it is tailored to specific conflicts.

We thank Indonesian Dispute Board for organising a fantastic experience into Indonesian Areas of Mediation. It will no doubt help us to transfer the Nordic Model to Indonesian Mediation. We are looking forward to continued knowledge exchange with the Indonesian people.

Training Content

Our trainings are built on the format described below:

1

Module 1: Online Pre-boarding - Get to know your trainer and the program focus points.

Pre-boarding consists of individual online meetings with each participating mediator (trainee), during which they will receive essential information and assigned reading to complete prior to the in-person training.

For those new to INM's courses, these meetings also serve as an opportunity for the trainers to get to know the participants and their particular area of mediation as well as for the participants to become familiar with the trainers.

2

Module 2: Offline Training - 10 days training program in the Jakarta Area

Format

The format of the training is practical, with role-plays and personal feedback. Mediation is also an ability to be present with the parties and oneself. This includes, among other things, being able to address challenges of both a psychological and procedural nature during mediation, in order to maintain a perception of impartiality. Our experience is that all this is best acquired in a challenging and caring learning environment. The very ability of giving and receiving  feedback is also part of the training.

Present in a profound and empathetic way

Exceptionally good at enhancing learning in a supportive manner.

People we have been training up through the years point at three domains of learnings:

  1. The knowledge they acquire about conflicts and how to enter as a third party
  2. The practical, hands-on approach by which they get concrete tools to facilitate solutions and learnings
  3. The process of personal development they go through in order to integrate the skills and the knowledge

Areas of Application

Mediation helps people recognize that the root of a conflict often lies in the attitudes, thoughts, and actions of all parties involved. To resolve the conflict, everyone must approach the situation differently. As a result, mediation represents a new way of being and can be applied to any type of conflict.

Mediation can, thus, be applied to…

Mediation is also relevant for..

The “new" conflict - understanding

Underlying causes for conflict

Our way of distribution as an important factor for conflict

The necessity for new being, thinking, relating, collaboration and action

About The Trainers

The trainers convey learning in both traditional and innovative ways. They are informal in teaching style, and they have a strong presence. They incarnate the Person-Centered Approach (PCA). This means they contribute the conditions for personal growth and learning. Acquiring new skills and developing new values are achieved experientially.

Therefore, the trainers are highly skilled in facilitating role-plays, and giving personal feedback, both positive and constructive negative feedback. Basically, the trainers are masters in challenging you, at the same time as they take very good care of you.
